Types of Mobility Scooter

Mobility scooter

Mobility scooters come in a variety of shapes, sizes and types. There are 3 wheeled scooters, 4 wheeled scooters, heavy duty scooters, lightweight and portable scooters. There are also two different types of scooter being – front wheel drive and rear wheel drive. Front wheel drive scooters are generally more compact and better suited for indoor use. Rear wheel drive on the other hand can support a weight of roughly 350 pounds and are best suited for outdoor use. The strongest rear wheel drive scooters can even support a weight capacity of up to 500 pounds!

Lightweight and Portable

Light weight and portable scooters are so compact that they can usually be broken down into 3 or 4 lightweight pieces for easy transportation. In this state, they can quickly be stored in smaller areas such as a car bonnet and perhaps even an airplanes hand luggage compartment. Many of the best lightweight scooters are 3 wheeled as 3 wheels is far better for indoor use due to their tighter turning radius.

4 Wheeled Scooters

Though there are some four wheeled portable scooters, generally speaking four wheeled scooters are more suited for outdoor use due to the additional stability provided by the fourth wheel. They also tend to have longer battery lives.

Heavy Duty Mobility Scooters

Heavy duty mobility scooters are designed specifically for individuals who require their scooters to have a greater weight capacity. This can range anywhere from 130kg to 230kg! Heavy duty mobility scooters are generally designed with a rear wheel drive so they can hold the weight. They are also usually built with high quality suspensions, reinforced frames and more customisable seat options. They will obviously all have a higher motor power than their lighter counterparts.
