Mobility Scooter Servicing & Repairs

Mobility scooter repair service

Many mobility scooter manufacturers will say that you should have your scooter serviced roughly once every year. This is purely for safety reasons and as we all know is common with all vehicles on the road today. Just like your car, a mobility scooter will eventually take some form of damage, whether it be natural wearing away or more serious damaged components. Some people prefer to fix the scooter themselves with the help of user manuals while others opt to call in a professional from the company which they bought their scooter from, or even a third-party vehicle repair service.

The connections that need to be checked are:

  • Batteries
  • Battery Charger
  • Front and Rear Lights
  • Brakes
  • Transmission Mounts
  • Wiring and Input/Output Connections
  • Wheels and Tyre Condition
  • Seat and Tiller
  • Undercarriage Joints

Some of the checks required can easily be performed by yourself without the need for help; specifically basic tasks such as examining the condition of the scooter’s wheels, the seat or even changing any lights. This is an excellent way to save money when you do get your scooter serviced by a professional as it cuts down work and costs. Reupholstering the seat is also not a hugely challenging task and with a little help from a guide can be undertaken quite easily. The seat  can be re-cushioned with any tears being covered up. If you’ve had any minor collisions or bumps and they’re starting to become noticeable it may be an idea to have the bodywork redone and have panels replaced.

A professional will test the scooter’s braking and steering mechanisms, especially how smoothly they function and whether or not they could be improved. If a fault is found, the technician will alert you about any necessary repairs and the costs that go along with it. Professionals will also fully test the batteries and charger to ensure that they are providing maximum battery life (or very close to it).

Generally speaking, every 12 months is the time you want to have your scooter serviced. For those who ride on roads this is extremely important and should be followed up with general checks on the scooter’s condition. The next time you’re driving to the supermarket, try to note any changes during your ride; this will help you identify any potential problems.
